The medium of an “exhibition” is generally regarded as a natural presentation form for architecture. A look back at the history of architecture exhibitions reveals a development which culminates in the practice of the exhibition itself being understood as a spatial art, which stands with equal value next to the architect’s building. Therefore an architecture exhibition no longer merely serves the purpose of documenting existing or future buildings, but has become an art form in itself, which has scarcely been taken into consideration up until now in research about the architecture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
The volume Architektur ausstellen – Zur mobilen Anordnung des Immobilen is dedicated on the one hand to the history and theory of the exhibition of architecture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and on the other hand to the practice of architecture, art history, media and cultural sciences, in order to reflect on esthetic strategies, media aspects, and architectural practices on a general level.
