A Botanical Garden is one of the most challenging and worthwhile tasks for landscape architects. And the new Botanical Garden Chenshan in the megacity of Shanghai, conceived by the German landscape architects Valentien + Valentien is more: it is a true example of globalization, blending German engineering knowledge with Chinese gardening tradition while representing the world’s nature in an 200 ha, circle-shaped area. Thus, its layout is at the same time a strong symbol for the principles of sustainability—a crucial issue not only for the rapidly growing city of Shanghai. The book is reflecting the design process of this unique landscaping project, explaining the concept against the background of the specific local conditions and expectations.
