One of the most successful architects of the economic miracle years, Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer’s uncompromising modern architecture had a lasting effect on building in the Federal Republic of those days. As a university professor at the technical university of Braunschweig, and based on the international development in Scandinavia and the USA, Kraemer also set the standards for a whole generation. With Mies van der Rohe – his explicit role model – he shared the commitment to clear shapes applied in a minimalist, virtually “classical“ language of architecture. The architectural work of Kraemer can be used to exemplify around fifty years of modern architecture in Germany. Buildings such as the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt-Hoechst, the Hochschulforum in Braunschweig or the reconstruction of the Herzog August library in Wolfenbüttel are brilliant examples of the outstanding quality of his body of work. Presented here for the first time, the generously- illustrated documentation of his work is complemented by essays on the cultural environment surrounding Kraemer within the context of the 1950’s and 1960’s.
