Drawings of architectural worlds continue to exert a never-ending fascination on viewers today. The possible forms of expression of architectural drawings are as varied as the thoughts that their draftsmen dare to think. For that reason, “paper architecture” occupies a very distinct position among the graphic arts. In this book, Sergei Tchoban, a well-known architect, virtuoso draftsman, and passionate collector of drawings by European architects and painters dating from the seventeenth century, shows his own work from a period of some thirty years in a dialogue with selected pieces from his collection. The collection focuses on motifs of ancient, baroque, and classical architecture. Nonetheless, the spectrum of Tchoban’s perspectiveillusionist representations is very broad. His works range from drawings featuring the play of light and water from his hometown of St. Petersburg, to travel impressions, fantasies, and visionary studies.
