The project “The Last Kings of Africa” represents an attempt by the documentary photographer Alfred Weidinger to draw attention to a vanishing, but very significant aspect of Africa’s human and cultural history – the last monarchs of the great African kingdoms, who he has been researching and portraying for a number of years. They are still managing to preserve their traditions and their dignity, and their wisdom and power are still revered. However, they have long since become a living paradox. They are immortalised in the portraits of rulers photographed predominantly in black and white, as an African legacy.
